Where to start: Me Before You. The series is a trilogy, and each book follows Louisa Clark on from the one before, so read them in this order.

Penguin Random House, the U.S. publisher, lists these three as books 1, 2 and 3 of the “Me Before You Trilogy,” and Jojo Moyes’s own site presents After You as the sequel and Still Me as the third book. The years are first publication: Me Before You came out in the UK on January 5, 2012 and in the U.S. on December 31, 2012; Penguin Random House lists the U.S. editions of After You on September 29, 2015 and Still Me on January 30, 2018.

What each book covers

  • Me Before You: Louisa Clark takes a job caring for Will Traynor, a wealthy man paralyzed after an accident. This is the book the film adapts.
  • After You: the direct sequel, about Lou rebuilding her life afterward. It assumes you have read book one.
  • Still Me: Lou arrives in New York to start a new life. It is book 3, the end of the trilogy.

The movie

Me Before You (2016) stars Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, was directed by Thea Sharrock, and was written for the screen by Jojo Moyes herself. It was released in the U.S. by Warner Bros. on June 3, 2016. The film adapts the first novel only; no film of After You or Still Me has been released.

If you have seen the movie, you can still start with book one: the novel spends more time inside Lou’s head and gives you the full setup the sequels build on. Then continue with After You and Still Me, which the film never reaches.

Audiobooks

The order is the same in audio, print, and ebook. If you are listening, check that the listing says Me Before You Trilogy, Book 1, 2 or 3, because box sets and tie-in editions use similar covers.
