Every date below was checked on October 19, 2026 against a studio announcement or trade-press report (the sources are listed at the bottom of the page). Where no date could be confirmed, the entry says “announced” and gives none. Release dates move often, so confirm the date with the studio or platform before you plan around it.
If you want to read the book first, start with the entries that have the nearest dates. If you would rather watch first and read after, nothing here stops you. These are reading suggestions, not reviews of the adaptations.

Dates are U.S. theatrical or U.S. streaming dates as reported. A film that is “released” is in U.S. theaters now and may not be streaming yet.
Already out: read these after, or alongside
East of Eden (Netflix, October 1, 2026). Zoe Kazan wrote the seven-episode limited series, with Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames. Steinbeck’s novel is a long, multigenerational family story, so the book is the larger commitment of the two.
Verity (theaters, October 2, 2026). Amazon MGM Studios released Michael Showalter’s film with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. Colleen Hoover self-published the novel in 2018 before Grand Central Publishing picked it up in 2021.
Carrie (Prime Video, October 7, 2026). Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode series is described in coverage as a reimagining that expands Stephen King’s 1974 novel across a full season, not a straight remake. All episodes arrived at once. Carrie is a Prime Video original, so this is the one title here with a streaming link: Watch the adaptation on Prime Video (a Prime Video search; check the title it shows).
Sense and Sensibility (theaters, October 16, 2026). Georgia Oakley directed this Focus Features film with Daisy Edgar-Jones. The U.S. date moved from September 11 to October 16. Austen’s novel is short enough to read before a weekend showing.
Whalefall (theaters, October 16, 2026). Brian Duffield directed the 20th Century Studios film from a screenplay he wrote with Daniel Kraus, who wrote the novel. Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin star.
Coming in late 2026
The Cat in the Hat (November 6). Warner Bros. Pictures Animation moved this animated film from February to November 2026. It is based on the Dr. Seuss picture book, which takes minutes to read, so it is the easiest “read first” on the list.
The Good Daughter (Peacock, November 12). All six episodes of Karin Slaughter’s limited series arrive at once, with Rose Byrne and Meghann Fahy as the sisters. Slaughter is showrunner and writer.
Victorian Psycho (theaters, November 13). Bleecker Street moved the Maika Monroe film from September 25 to November 13. It is based on Virginia Feito’s novel.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (theaters, November 20). Lionsgate’s prequel follows young Haymitch Abernathy at the 50th Hunger Games, from Suzanne Collins’s novel of the same name. Francis Lawrence directs, and Joseph Zada plays Haymitch. It opens about a month after this page was checked, which leaves time to read the book.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians, season 3 (Disney+, November 20). Season 3 adapts the third book, The Titan’s Curse, and has eight episodes released two at a time over four weeks. The earlier books are in Percy Jackson and the Olympians books in order .
In a Holidaze (Netflix, December 2). Tiffany Paulsen wrote and directed this adaptation of Christina Lauren’s 2020 holiday novel, with Maddie Ziegler and Rob Lowe.
Dune: Part Three (theaters, December 18). Warner Bros. dates Denis Villeneuve’s third film for theaters, IMAX included. Trade coverage describes it as the film of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the 1969 sequel to Dune. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (HBO, December 25). HBO’s series debuts on Christmas Day, 2026, earlier than the 2027 window it first announced. See Harry Potter books in order for the book sequence. The U.S. title of the first book is Sorcerer’s Stone.
Coming in 2027
Children of Blood and Bone (theaters, January 15). Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the Paramount film from Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 novel, the first book of the Legacy of Orisha series.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew (theaters February 12, Netflix April 2). Greta Gerwig’s film was first dated November 26, 2026. Netflix moved it to a wide theatrical release on February 12, 2027, with IMAX previews from February 10, then streaming on April 2, 2027. The Nightingale (theaters, March 19). TriStar’s film, with Dakota and Elle Fanning, moved from February 12 to March 19, 2027. It adapts Kristin Hannah’s novel.
Beach Read (theaters, May 7). 20th Century Studios dates Yulin Kuang’s film of Emily Henry’s novel for theaters only; Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger lead.
The Housemaid’s Secret (theaters, December 17). Lionsgate dates Paul Feig’s film for December 2027, with Sydney Sweeney returning. It is the sequel to the 2025 film, and the novel is the second in Freida McFadden’s series, so read The Housemaid first.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (theaters, December 17). Warner Bros. dates Andy Serkis’s film, in which he also stars, for December 2027. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is the place to start for the world and for Gollum; our Lord of the Rings reading order lays out the route.
Announced, no date
Fourth Wing (Prime Video). Amazon ordered a series based on Rebecca Yarros’s novel in May 2026, with Meredith Averill as showrunner. No premiere date has been announced. The books are in Empyrean series in order .
Why dates on this page change
Several dates above have already moved: Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew (from November 26, 2026 to February 12, 2027), Sense and Sensibility (September 11 to October 16, 2026), Victorian Psycho (September 25 to November 13, 2026) and The Nightingale (February 12 to March 19, 2027). HBO moved Harry Potter earlier, from a 2027 window to Christmas 2026. Treat any date more than a few months out as a plan, not a promise. The books, at least, do not move.

Why does one entry say “announced”? The series order for Fourth Wing has been reported, but no premiere date had been confirmed on October 19, 2026.
